Summer Evening Melodies – Cultural Encounter at Hanko Casino

On Friday evening, July 10, the historic Hanko Casino came alive with music after a long silence, as the Summer Evening Melodies event brought together a large audience to enjoy chamber music in a unique setting.

The evening’s performers were pianist Alina Sorjonen, violinist Lea Tuuri, violist Matti Lindholm, and cellist Tuomas Ylinen. The musicians introduced the audience to the atmosphere of the upcoming concert with musical teasers, as well as shedding light on the background of the repertoire and the history of the artists and composers who worked in Hanko. During the evening, the audience got to explore both the rich cultural heritage of the music and the city.

Alongside the music, discussions took place regarding the cultural-historical significance of Hanko Casino. Architect Kari Leppänen emphasized the broad significance of culture in his speech. He also mentioned that preliminary discussions have been initiated with the City of Hanko regarding the restoration of the casino’s facades, particularly concerning the building’s windows.

After the musical previews, the discussion continued lively among both artists and listeners. Youth from Villa Tellinna were also present, serving coffee and homemade mocha brownies.

Pianist Alina Sorjonen sees a special significance in the cultural-historical environment from an artist’s perspective as well:

”As an artist, I feel that cultural-historical heritage is priceless. Historic buildings carry stories, spirit, and atmosphere that cannot be rebuilt – they are created over time. Therefore, cherishing them is also cherishing living culture.”
