Architect

Kaarlo Nathanaël Borg (1888–1939) was a Finnish architect whose career is particularly associated with the transition period from classicism to functionalism in Finnish architecture. Kaarlo graduated as an architect from the Polytechnic Institute of Finland in 1913. During his career, he worked as a private architect and in various official roles, for instance, as a teacher at the Ateneum School of Applied Arts. He designed buildings especially in Helsinki and other cities in Southern Finland and was also involved in several public building design projects. [8]
He became engaged to Hilkka Stenius in 1917, whom he later married. In Kaarlo Borg’s family, artistic and cultural heritage was also passed down to his children. His son Kim Borg became an opera singer, Olli Borg an architect, and Jaakko Borg a composer and record producer. Kaarlo’s younger sister Elsi Borg was also an architect, and his older sister Margit Borg-Sundman worked as a teacher and later as a Member of Parliament. [8]
Kaarlo Borg was a skilled and precise architect who represented the architectural transition of his time from classicism to functionalism. His buildings combine traditional language of form with the practicality of modern architecture. Although his name is not widely known internationally, he had a strong impact on the development of the Finnish building tradition in the early 20th century. He designed public buildings, such as schools and government offices, as well as apartment buildings, especially in Helsinki.
